Study Examining Participant-Reported Outcomes With BEACON40® 40Hz Gamma Light

A six-week, third-party observational study conducted by Heads Up Health in collaboration with OvationLab evaluated participant-reported changes in focus, mood, perceived stress, overall well-being, and sleep among adults who incorporated BEACON40®, a device delivering passive 40Hz gamma light exposure, into their home routines.

Abstract

This six-week observational study examined participant-reported outcomes associated with the use of BEACON40® 40 Hz gamma light in adults who self-identified challenges related to focus, mood, stress, sleep, and overall well-being. The study included 50 participants and was conducted by OvationLab in collaboration with Heads Up Health, documenting how individuals incorporated BEACON40® into their home routines over the study period.

Quantitative analysis of participant-reported outcome measures indicated directional changes from baseline across multiple wellness-related domains, including:

  • Focus: up to 48% positive change reported

  • Mood: up to 46% positive change reported

  • Perceived stress: up to 40% reduction reported

  • Overall well-being: up to 38% positive change reported

  • Sleep quality: up to 19% positive change reported

These participant-reported findings offer exploratory insight into the role of non-invasive, light-based experiences within everyday wellness routines. Results reflect self-reported outcomes within the study population, may vary between individuals, and are not intended to imply diagnosis, treatment, or prevention of any medical condition.

Overview

Company: BEACON40®

Industry: Consumer Wellness Technology

Objective

To evaluate real-world use of the BEACON40® light therapy system, including user experience and participant-reported outcomes—based on standardized self-report tools and wearable data analysis via the Heads Up Health platform.

Research Leadership

The study was conducted in partnership with OvationLab, a consultancy focused on advancing personalized health innovation. It was led by Dr. Chris D’Adamo, Ph.D., an epidemiologist and Assistant Professor at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, who specializes in research related to lifestyle factors and health outcomes.

Study Design

Participants: 50 adults who self-identified concerns related to focus and/or sleep.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • At least 3 months of Oura Ring sleep and readiness data
  • Below-average sleep or recovery scores
  • Interest in supporting focus, sleep, and wellness

Exclusion Criteria:
Participants were excluded if pregnant, undergoing chemotherapy, diagnosed with sleep apnea, or light-sensitive.

Intervention:Participants used BEACON40® for ~1 hour daily over 6 weeks, following general use guidance.

Data Collection:

  • PROMIS: Assessed perceived sleep quality and disturbances
  • ATTC (Attention Control Scale): Measured concentration and attention
  • PSS (Perceived Stress Scale): Evaluated perceived stress levels

Conclusion

This six-week observational study, led by OvationLab and Heads Up Health, examined  how participants incorporatedBEACON40® into daily life and documented participant-reported changes across focus, sleep, mood, stress, and overall well-being  over the study period.

Participants reported generally positive experiences across multiple wellness-related  domains. These findings are consistent with emerging academic interest in  40Hz gamma light exposure and its role in wellness-focused research contexts.as a tool to support brain function and wellness. BEACON40® represents a simple, non-invasive, passive light-based option that some individuals may choose to incorporate into their personal wellness routines.

This study was observational and based on self-reported outcomes. Individual results may vary. BEACON40® is not a medical device and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
