Because "Lion's Mane" on a label describes a species, not a specific material. The same mushroom, Hericium erinaceus, can be sold as fruiting body extract, mycelium extract, or mycelium grown on a grain substrate that is never separated out before the powder is packaged. Those three materials contain different ratios of the compounds studied for brain-related activity, and the grain-substrate version can end up mostly starch by weight.
What is the difference between fruiting body and mycelium?
The fruiting body is the actual mushroom, the part you would recognize on a plate or in a photo. The mycelium is the root-like structure the mushroom grows from, often cultivated in a lab on a substrate like rice or oats. Which compounds should you actually be looking for?
Look for beta-glucan percentage on a Certificate of Analysis, ideally from an assay method built to separate beta-glucans from starch, not a general polysaccharide test. Clean fruiting body extract commonly tests in the 20 to 40 percent beta-glucan range, while grain-diluted mycelium products frequently test in the single digits. The human research on Lion's Mane has also been conducted almost entirely on fruiting body material. Neither trial studied healthy adults in the 45 to 65 range specifically, and neither is evidence about any finished multi-ingredient product. They are evidence about fruiting body extract, in the populations studied, which is a useful data point when you are deciding what kind of Lion's Mane extract to look for.

What should you check before buying a Lion's Mane supplement?
Check three things: whether the label specifies fruiting body, mycelium, or both, whether a beta-glucan percentage is listed and by what test method, and whether the source is disclosed at all. A label that just says "Lion's Mane mushroom powder" with no extract type or testing method is the one to be cautious about.
