Neuroscientists are getting excited about non-invasive procedures to tune the brain’s natural oscillations. Although scientists have observed the effects of differing brainwaves for the past 100 years, only now are they understanding the positive effects that certain frequencies have on restoring gamma wave activity in the brain. The work offers the possibility of forestalling or even reversing the damage caused by such conditions without using a drug. More than two dozen clinical trials are aiming to modulate brainwaves in some way—some with flickering lights and rhythmic sounds, and others through the direct application of electrical currents to the brain or scalp.
